Day 2- Monday, April 08, 2013

Today, I had to get up early for classes at QUT. We started by looking through some popular children's books about Australia. It was really cool to see the books because although the story lines in the are similar to the ones in the US. the animals used and the words are different. My favorite book was called There was an Old Bloke who Swallowed a Bunny. This book is an Australian version of There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly (one of my favorite children's books). It features many Australian phrases and animals. "Crikey that's funny!"

After that, we had a break for morning tea (snack break). Surprisingly there wasn't any tea there :) After our Tea we got to go to a lecture about assessments with actual Australian College students. There were a few times when we had to turn and discuss something with a mate. As my fellow travel mates and I were talking, many of the Aussie students kept looking and smiling at us because they loved the way we talked. They then asked us to say certain words over and over again. I found the lecture itself interesting. It was about a lot of things that I had already learned about in the states. They had their own research and studies to back up the same things that I had learned about at MSU.

After our lecture class, we went back to one of the classrooms to discus some teaching strategies that are popular among teachers here. We also got to practice Australian handwriting. People tell me that I have really nice handwriting but here in Australia ... yeah it sucked. I literally couldn't do their handwriting. It was so HARD!!! Its like half cursive/ half not and I was just not having it.

We then had a short break for lunch, which consisted of Subway. In Australia, their Subway sandwiches had all these weird sauces on them and carrots. That was a little strange. After lunch we got our student ID cards and true to form mine looks horrendous so there will be no picture of that :). That afternoon I sat outside and read a book in the Bali Hut. It was amazing. I did however get bitten by Maussies (Mosquitoes).

That evening we had a pot roast for dinner (imagine that :)) and ice cream for dessert. He had the Australian version of Neopaliton Ice Cream which they call Multi that consisted of Vanilla, Chocolate, and Caramel. It was pretty good but Ice Cream from the Mid-West is WAY better.
